Translation: On a clear evening in Badong, travelling with Xue Qi and Zhu Xun In this poem, the poet Liu Changqing describes a scene of a serene evening in Badong. The sky has cleared after rain, and the scenery is reflected in the dark waters of the Ba River. The poet turns towards the west to watch the setting sun, which bathes the mulberry and elm trees in a warm glow. Xue Qi and Zhu Xun, two friends of the poet, are with him on this journey. The poem praises their talent and virtue, and acknowledges their companionship on this long journey. As the poet and his friends pass by ancient trees and villages, they appreciate the beauty of nature and the simple lives of the people. The poet reflects on his own situation as a dispossessed wanderer, and muses on the unpredictability of fate. The pursuit of a good path requires a focused mind, but the struggle for survival leaves little time for it. Yet, the poet feels fortunate to have these noble and accomplished friends as his companions, even though they are all serving under a powerful ruler. The poet uses vivid imagery to depict the long and winding journey the travelers undertake, and the complex relationships between guests and hosts. The road is full of ups and downs, and the poet compares it to the twists and turns of a host entertaining his guest during the night. The reference to "Xun" and "Qi" could be symbolic of their worth. Xun may refer to crude jade, while Qi may refer to superior pieces of jade. Through their association with the poet and their shared experiences, they have become like brothers, and the dust of worldly affairs is left behind. Overall, the poem captures the beauty of nature, the bonds of friendship, and the ever-changing fortunes of life.
